J-MELO Party in LA |
On October 28th, J-MELO held a party at the beautiful Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, CA. Not only was it a special opportunity to get together and share love for Japanese music, it was also he celebration of NHK World for the 50th anniversary of KCET.

At 7:30 pm, the event started off with welcome remarks from the organizers/managers. They initially prompted the audience to report to the bar and grab a glass of soda to welcome the guests of honor, Ai Takakashi and Taku Takahashi, with a toast.

After the two greeted the crowd, Greg Hignight of Tune in Tokyo was called up to the stage to get the party going. The crowd warmed up as Greg's hype-inducing mixes of house music and Japanese tracks which blasted through the speakers.
J-MELO Party in L.A. | "Ai-chan" a.k.a. Ai Takahashi |
The next act was Ai-chan, a.k.a. Ai Takahashi, who graced the stage with her super kawaii dance moves mixed with her equally super cool mixes that included Big Bang's "Fantastic Baby", 2NE1 & m-flo's "Outta Control", and many Morning Musume hits. One could tell that she was an idol with all that star power on she naturally poured out on stage for the audience to enjoy. This amazing performance was her first in the US.

Last one to entertain the crowd was Taku Takahashi of m-flo. This guy was a true pro in his craft. He pumped up the crowd and made them dance with his master mixes that included Utada Hikaru's "First Love" and many distinct m-flo works.

After all the performances, the crowd received a few words from Ai-chan and DJ Taku giving their thanks. Soon after, they also instructed the crowd to huddle in to film a shout out to J-MELO.
After which, Ai-chan's manager took a group photo for everyone!

All entertainment ended early at 9 pm and with 30 minutes to spare before they closed the place down. The audience were allowed to have more soda & food on the house while enjoying the ambiance of the venue. During that time, the camera crew selected individuals to interview for the show and people were able to socialize like a mini party.
This intimate gathering was a great experience. You had to email them to request an invitation, but not all were fortunate to be granted one. The audience's demographics ranged from young adults to older adults. Some dressed to impress, ready to party, and very few felt festive enough to come in cosplay. The venue was a small restaurant with a bar that has it's tables chairs cleared up. A small stage had been set up towards the back for the night's entertainment, also. And unlike most parties or concerts, the stage was lit excessively to allow the best lighting for the show's filming agenda. The size of the venue was able to accommodate all the audience members present with a lot of room left over. The event, itself, was organized and on-time. The audience has been warned during the opening remarks that cameras will be filming the entire event and there may be the need to re-shoot a couple of scenes for the show. No re-takes happened due to the crowd's cooperation and respect to the staff and fellow audience members. All in all, it was one night of great party music with amazing artists and a crowd of Japanese-music-lovers.
